Contributions that can be made by emotional literacy for social and emotional wellbeing of childrens How can parents and carers, schools and communities aid the social and emotional wellbeing of children? Discuss what contribution can be made by emotional literacy. For many years, the emphasis on childhood as evolved on the cognitive and physical aspects of child development. Recently, more attention has been given on the emotional and social welfare of childrens development. Childrens emotional maturity and immaturity on their personal happiness, performance and behaviour has finally been recognised, as a consequence, this is currently being recognised by schemes such as, The Healthy Schools Initiative. The Healthy Schools Initiative contributes significantly to emotional health and well-being. All children deserve the opportunity to achieve their full potential. This is set this out in the five Every Child Matters (ECM) outcomes that are key to children and young peoples well-being: The five outcomes are: * Stay safe * Be healthy * Enjoy and achieve * Make a positive contribution * Achieve economic well-being To achieve ECM, The HM document states children need to feel loved and valued, and be supported by a network of reliable and affectionate relationships. If they are denied the opportunity and support they need to achieve these outcomes, children are at increased risk not only of an impoverished childhood, but also of disadvantage and social exclusion in adulthood (HM Government, 2006, pg 32). In a nutshell, the promotion of positive emotional health and well-being helps young people and children to build their confidences and express their feelings. It embeds the understanding and their capacity to learn effectively. Emotional literacy is the ability to understand ourselves and others and to be aware of, understand and to use information about the emotional states of others with competence. It includes the ability to understand, express and manage our own emotions, and respond to the emotions of others, in ways that are helpful to ourselves and others. Developing the Emotionally Literate School (Weare, 2004) Emotional Intelligence is linked to The Nuturing Programme. The programme origniated in the United States as a result of research undertaken by Dr Strephen J. Bavolek who pioneered in the prevention of child abuse and neglect and the development of family life. The progamme aims to enable children to become emotionally literate by exploring ideas which can contribute to learning to mange our emotions. Learning these skills can improve our motivation, help us feel good about ourselves and explores ideas for managing our emotions. Learning these skills can contribute to building self-esteem, which is crucial to provide positive attitude towards living. This is important as it controls how you think, the way you act and more importantly, how you relate to other people. Consequently, emotional literacy leads to emotional health; this health can have a huge impact on your potential to be successful in every aspect of life. All ingredients for emotional literacy are reflected in the Nurturing programme. The programme offers an effective way of encouraging co-operative behaviour, which empowers both parent/carer and children. It is also an emotional literacy programme. It is therefore crucial to state, that as a facilitator we need to reflect upon our own level of emotional literacy, as we cannot help others to become more emotionally literate unless we are emotional literate ourselves. We are all born with emotional intelligence and naturally, wired to our brains. However, how this emotional literacy develops depends on the kind of relationships they have and the adults caring for them. There are five elements of emotional literacy reflect the key principles of the Nurturing Programme. These are required in order to develop and become emotionally literate. Family Links quotes these key principles as:  · Knowing our emotions Self-awareness recognising a feeling as it happens is the first stage. We can eventually learn to stay aware, simply noticing the emotion rather than being overwhelmed by it, however turbulent we may be feeling at the time. We can guide our behaviour positively, and also resist the lure of instant gratification in other words, we develop self-discipline.  · Recognising emotions in others Empathy, the ability to be sensitively aware of what another person is feeling, is the most important people skill of all, and essential for satisfying relationships. Children who are treated with empathy and respect will grow up to be empathic and respectful towards others. * Handling relationships Building on empathy, the art of relationships is based on skill in coping with emotions in others while also managing and expressing our own effectively having good communication skills. Emotionally skilled people are great to be with because we enjoy their rapport. People who have these skills are easy to trust with our feelings, and learning these skills ourselves enhances all our relationships. All the approaches, strategies and ideas in the Nurturing Programme are based on these four key concepts as outlined by Family Links:  · Self-awareness and self-esteem The art of self-awareness is to know ourselves well what we do and dont like, what our needs are, how we feel. If we are sensitive towards ourselves, its easier to look after our needs. Nurturing ourselves by meeting our own needs helps to boost our self-esteem, making it easier for us to nurture others and particularly to help children develop their self-awareness and a healthy, positive self-esteem.  · Appropriate expectations Children grow up in different ways: physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally. We need to match our expectations to what they can actually do. They learn all the thousands of skills at different rates. What one child finds easy another child of the same age might find hard. If we expect too much or too little of them, children tend to become rebellious, frustrated and angry, or to give up in despair. It is helpful to them if we recognise each small step in their learning.  · Positive discipline All children need discipline to learn what behaviour is OK and what is not. Positive discipline focuses on praise, rewarding their efforts, giving choices, negotiating and awarding responsibility. There are also fair penalties for poor behaviour. It makes life more enjoyable for adults and children, and helps to build self-esteem. Negative discipline, on the other hand, uses punishment and fear; it is stressful for everyone. Empathy is the ability to sense how someone else is feeling, to tune in to their emotional point of view. We dont have to agree with what the other person thinks just to be sensitive to the way they feel, and to accept it. An empathic response to a childs inner world, to their excitement, frustrations and fears, fosters a close, trusting relationship, and helps them learn to respond sensitively towards others (Family Links, 2004) The author works with children weekly within the school environment. The work centres on supporting the development of childrens personal, social, emotional and behavioural growth. The aim is to: * Raise childrens self awareness * Develop healthy self esteem and confidence * Help children to manage their emotions and behaviour/social difficulties * Improve motivation and improve learning opportunities in and out of school The children work on individual targets, and sessions help them practice the skills they require to meet these targets both within class and all areas of their lives. A balance of role models promote group dynamics and peer support. A wide range of techniques are used within the session which includes: * Art focused work * Structured play * Drama * Counselling approaches * Relaxation, visualisation and reflection exercises * Circle time discussions * Reflection exercises Parent/carers play a huge role in their childs social and emotional well-being. It is important in its own right, simply because it can affect their physical health for both the child and parent/carer and can have a detrimental effect on how well the child does at school. Therefore, good social, emotional and psychological health protects children from emotional and behavioral problems, misuse of drugs and alcohol, for example. Therefore, it is equally important to pay attention to the social and emotional skills that children develop in their earliest years, as it will enable them to succeed through the transition from primary to secondary school and into adulthood. In a nutshell, responsibility for school readiness lies not with the child, but with the parent/carers who care for them and the educational systems in place to support them. Critically, intervention may not be successful with all children and families, especially those with Special Educational Needs (SEN), English as an Additional Language (EAL) and a withdrawn and shy child. One must take into account the dynamics of the group and these must be taken into account when actively planning intervention. Therefore, group work may not be the appropriate solution, therefore one to one teaching may be a useful strategy in order to provide intervention. This work complements existing national initiatives to promote social and emotional well-being. It should be considered in the context of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) programme and related community-based initiatives. These initiatives stress the importance of such programmes to enable children to participate fully in the development to ensure their views are heard. To conclude, we are now beginning to understand that by providing these enriched environments children and young people are more able to develop emotional intelleigence and maturity far more effectively than they used too. Many schools, like mine, is putting so much empahisis into the development, simply because it leads to so many benefits. Without the ability to be aware of their emotional states and self-management skills to contain and handle these, their work will suffer. Consequently, the existence of leaded gasoline contributes to lead poisoning and overall poor health. The cost efficiency of the phase-out process was the issue on which most of the class discussion focused. These health costs may or may not be seen in less developed nations that phase-out leaded gasoline. The health costs are seen in developed nations primarily because individuals in industrialized countries seek health care attention when ill. Police and Society January 31, 2013 Police Misconduct and Corruption In the early 1990’s police brutality had become common; police officers abused their powers and became brutal when dealing with offenders and even non-offenders. One infamous example of such brutality occurred in 1992 in Los Angeles when a black man named Rodney King was violently beat by five officers for being â€Å"black. The five officers repeatedly struck King as a few other officers stood by not paying any attention to the situation near by. Two of the five officers were later acquitted which angered the black and Latino community around the world as did the videotape of the incident. This incident did however put more attention and awareness on the issue of police brutality. A few weeks after the King incident, a drug scandal in New York erupted into another police brutality incident. This prompted an investigation on police corruption by the Mollen Commission. The investigation found many occurrences of police abuses, including brutality, corruption, and perjury. A century before the Mollen Commission, in 1894 the Lexow Commission in New York discovered the same occurrences of police brutality. This shows that police corruption has been going on for many years and is continuing to happen now. Although the public less accepts police brutality now, it is believed that most police corruption is done â€Å"underground† or through legal loopholes. I have chosen to research Police Brutality because I find it outrageous that the people who swore to protect us cheat the law and use excessive force without reason. I am majoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice, so I am curious to learn about why officers feel the need to become brutal. Is it a lust of power? I’m interested in learning about the sociology of police brutality.

From his yellow car to his pink suit, everything about Gatsby portraits his idealism. Fitzgerald’s many references to color play a key part in making Gatsby the iconic character he has become. The first time the reader sees Gatsby he is staring into the night. At first Nick believes Gatsby is looking at the sky, peppered with silver stars. In fact, Gatsby is enthralled by a green light in the distance. The light, coming from the end of Daisy’s dock, symbolizes how close Gatsby is to his dream. In the United States, a green light means go (Wikipedia), which is perhaps the easiest way to summarize what Gatsby is thinking to himself as he stares into the green light. Gatsby had spent five years building himself up to the position and location he is now located in. With all the effort and illegal activity Gatsby ahs put into his transformation, he is, no doubt, telling himself to just go for it. Daisy is only inches from his grasp. Green is also a symbol of wealth, especially in the United States (Wikipedia). It is fitting that Daisy’s light should be green. Daisy weighs everything in her life on its financial value. Thus the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock also symbolizes her greed and superficial values, which Gatsby embraces, just as he reaches out to embrace the green light. â€Å"He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (25). Not only does it resemble the wealth which is a crutch for all of Daisy’s decisions; the light also resembles the wealth that Gatsby worked so hard to obtain, in order to please Daisy. The first time Nick and Gatsby go to New York together, Gatsby is dressed in a caramel suit. Brown, in many cultures, resembles poverty (Wikipedia). Despite all his efforts to reinvent himself, Gatsby will always have a little bit of James Gatz in him. Even though he had long ago left his family behind to find a better life for himself, Gatsby travels back to visit his father and buy him a house. Brown can also represent wholesomeness, friendliness, and dependability (Wikipedia), all of which are characteristics of Gatsby. Finally, brown can be used to mean simplicity (Wikipedia). This is especially fitting after we see Gatsby’s personal bedroom. â€Å"His bedroom was the simplest of all – except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold† (97). Gold is another color often associated with Gatsby, whether it is in the form of his toiletries or his clothing. As cold is a precious and expensive metal, it is used to symbolize something that is precious or costly (Whyte). For Gatsby, gold represents the great wealth he has obtained. Everything he has earned is precious to him only based on Daisy’s reaction. She adores his rich clothes and gold hairbrush, so they mean that much more to Gatsby. While Gatsby now wears gold suits, he once wore a blue coat given to him by his mentor Dan Cody. His chauffeurs too wear uniforms of robin’s egg blue. This is fitting because blue often represents idealism (Wikipedia), a virtue with which Gatsby is very familiar. In fact, the entire book is formed around Gatsby’s attempts to achieve his ideals. Further, it is symbolic that Cody should be the one to give Gatsby the blue coat, because it is Cody who teaches Gatsby how to obtain wealth, and therefore reach his goals. Blue also appears in the form of a dress which Gatsby buys for a guest. It is â€Å"gas blue with lavender beads† (48). The dress comes into the story after a party. One of his guests accidentally rips her dress, so Gatsby replaces it with the blue one. Blue can also symbolize peace (Wikipedia) which Gatsby hoped to keep by purchasing the dress for $265. Gatsby not only buys rich clothes but also for himself, including a white suit which he wears on the day he is finally reunited with Daisy. White was a wise choice because it represents security (Wikipedia). During their first romance, Daisy leaves Gatsby because he lacks the money needed to guarantee her security. Now, however, Gatsby has an abundance of wealth and is perfectly capable of offering her the security she needs. Aside from his luxurious attire, Gatsby also has a fancy yellow car. Yellow often symbolizes optimism, as well as idealism (Wikipedia). Not only is Gatsby the epitome of idealism, he also very much embodies the practice of optimism. Ever since he was a child, Gatsby has believed in the potential of his life and his ability to better himself. â€Å"‘Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that’† (182). However, yellow can also stand for dishonesty (Wikipedia). Gatsby’s dishonesty is a critical aspect of who he is. Displeased with his poor upbringing, James Gatz creates an entirely new identity (Jay Gatsby). When he first meets Daisy he lies about his background to gain her attention and make her believe he is worthy of her. Among all of his ‘friends’ Gatsby is dishonest about where he obtained his wealth, claiming inheritance. He is also well-known throughout the novel for his white lies. Gatsby likes to stretch the truth, for example, saying that he is an Oxford man, when he only attended for five months. Aside from his yellow car, Gatsby is most characterized by his pink suit. His pink suit seems to deny the credibility of some of his claims, such as being an Oxford man. â€Å"Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit† (129). However, pink often tends to symbolize admiration (Wikipedia). Despite the fact that no one really knows anything about Gatsby (mainly because there isn’t anything to know, since Jay Gatsby isn’t actually a real person), he is still extremely admired and respected by his party guests and acquaintances. Fitzgerald uses color symbolism to set up the array of characteristics of Gatsby. These colors play a key role in establishing Gatsby’s strong personality. In order to gauge the perception of the 120 respondents, they were asked to gauge each aspect of the event using a four-point rating scale (very good, good, poor, and very poor). In terms of the quality of the clothes featured in the fashion show, 56, or 46.7%, out of the 120 respondents, which make it 46.7 %, said that the featured cloth es were â€Å"very good.† Thirty-five, 29.2%, respondents said the clothes were â€Å"good.† On the other hand, there were a total of 29 respondents, 24.2%, who provided a negative feedback on the clothes shown at the fashion event. Therefore, 75.8% of the shoppers who witnessed the event liked the quality of the featured clothes, and 24.2% of the shoppers said that the clothes shown at the fashion event had poor quality. Domino’s opened in 1960 and grew to 200 stores in 1978 and currently operates almost 9000 stores worldwide and has the largest share of the approximate $15 Billion/year pizza market. They compete with Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and Little Caesar’s along with local pizza shops. Despite being one of the most well-known brands in the United States, between 2006 and 2008 Domino’s Pizza was in crisis. After leaving Pepsi, Chief Marketing Office Russell Weiner joined Domino’s and inherited a brand with plummeting sales and a bad image due to their lackluster product. A month after he joined the company, sales hit a record low of $2.83 a share in November 2008 and today, it’s up around $72 a share. (Jeff Beer, 2014). Trying to overcome the reputation of having the worst pizza, in 2009, Domino’s CEO  acknowledged in a commercial that Domino’s pizza doesn’t taste good. He apologized for its poor ingredients and promised to improve t he recipe. After that statement was made, store sales grew 14.3% the following quarter. (Forbes Magazine, 2013). Domino’s had $1.5 Billion in sales and earned $80 million in profit that year. Domino’s made their customers a promise to provide better ingredients which they did, but the most important ingredient has been the technology and investment in digital and mobile where they’ve made it faster and easier for customers to place and track orders. In 2003, Domino’s implemented a Transaction Processing System (TPS) called â€Å"Pulse† as a point-of-sale system. Pulse helps Domino’s maintain consistent and efficient management functions in each of their stores. The Data from purchases and payments from orders are captured by this computerized system and recorded. Pulse captures the information from the customer’s order such as type of crust, toppings, side dishes and delivery locations. Once the data is collected, pulse will calculate the number of pizzas and side orders sold, cost of ingredients along with delivery and customer information. The stores in which Pulse was installed reported improved customer services, reduced mistakes and shorter training times. Domino’s most recently updated to â€Å"Pulse Evolution† which is faster, less expensive and easier to maintain. From an operational standpoint, you can use Information Systems to gain a cost advantage over competitors or to differentiate yourself by offering better customer service. (Bert Markgraf, 2015). Since January 2010, shares of Domino’s have significantly surpassed the competition rising 750% while Papa John’s grew 193% and Pizza Hut grew 93%. The latest innovation from  Domino’s (Pizza Tracker) allows a customer to watch a simulated version of their pizza being made all the way through to the finished product. Pizza Profiles allow customers who order online to save their information and reorder their favorite order in as little as five clicks, or about 30 seconds. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage in a joint to become stiff and lose its elasticity, making it more susceptible to damage. Appearance Versus Reality in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie In any Tennessee Williams' play, nothing is as it seems. Everything represents more than itself. Williams' creative use of symbols creates a drama that far exceeds the apparent or surface level. Williams himself admits that "art is made out of symbols the way your body is made out of the vital tissue," and that "symbols are nothing but the natural speech of drama [. . . ,] the purest language of plays [. . . ; S]ometimes it would take page after tedious page of exposition to put across an idea that could be said with an object or a gesture on the lighted stage" (Demastes 174). The reader must engage not only what appears to be just a needed prop or dialogue, but also the reader has to project beyond the obvious to understand the full impact of the symbols Williams uses. He controls every aspect of his plays by giving very precise stage directions. He is the god of his work. He directs every aspect as if he is afraid to turn lose any control unless it becomes something else than he wi lls it to be. In The Glass Menagerie, Williams uses many symbols that cannot fully be retained by the reader in just one reading of the play. The Glass Menagerie is a play about a dysfunctional family during the 1930s and how they survive in their own world of reality. Even the characters themselves are symbols of a deeper meaning; for example, Amanda Wingfield's name itself is revealing. Amanda contains the word man, and she has to play the role of the man and the woman of the house since the father deserted the family long ago. Essay 3 College will be a major change for me; in all likelihood, it will probably be the most significant transformation I will experience. It will be a time of growth and learning. In order to adapt to these many changes I hope to mature both emotionally and spiritually. In doing so, I will influence those around me and the community as a whole. I anticipate that my life experiences will prove to be valuable to me and to those I come into contact with.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I have had many challenges to overcome thusfar. I’ve had problems with family members, with girls, with friends, but most significantly, problems with myself. Today, an ordinary, everyday person can be transformed into a hero or villain almost instantly. A catalyst is definitely needed to perform this transformation. An event usually has to pull out the heroic traits of a person. For instance a person who witnesses a car accident and this person runs to the scene of the burning car and pulls the occupant(s) out risking his own life in doing so. If this accident had not had happened, this person would never have been considered a hero of any sort. Another example of this is Stuart Diver. He was buried in a landslide in 1997. After 3 days and against all odds, Stuart was pulled alive from the ruble. The media labeled him as a hero. One day Stuart was skiing in Threadbo, the next he was fighting for his like under his house and the next he was a household name and a hero. To become a villain there is a different ‘procedure’. A person must perform an evil act to be considered a villain. Suicide bombers are instantly classified as villains the second they detonate their bomb. 2 minutes before the detonation, the bomber was an ordinary person who looked like he was minding his own business, no one could have suspected he was a soon-to-be villain. But people must remember that these are martyrs for their cause. They feel they are doing the right thing by killing people and their people idolize and label them as heroes. Another example of this is ‘chopper’ Reed. He went around the streets killing many people who he labeled ‘bad’ people (mainly drug dealers†¦). Chopper thought he was doing the world a favour by killing these people, but as society states – anyone who kills is a villain. A person who accidentally releases a poisonous gas and kills many people can also be labeled a villain by definition, but I believe a villain has to have the intention to create havoc and evil. So this is an example of how an  ordinary person can suddenly be called a villain by way of a mistake – which acts as the catalyst. So yes, ordinary people can suddenly become villains or heroes at the flick of a switch but there is always going to be a catalyst, an event that will perform the transformation.

Persuasive Writing Assignment Essay

Rebellion is when one refuses to accept authority. The transition of childhood into adulthood is most often represented by actions of rebellious nature. The average teen is always looking for away to escape conformity. Two pieces of work that express a common theme of rebellion and conformity are, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and the movie Conspiracy Theory starting Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. Both pieces express this common theme of rebellious and conformity in a society that simply won’t allow it. In the novel The Catcher in the Rye the main character, Holden Caulfield, goes through many hardships in trying to search for his place in society. Holden rebels throughout the whole book against rules, schools, and people that he encountered. An example of Holden’s external conflict with conformity was on his date with Sally. At the end of their date, Holden shares a dream of running away with her to escape the normalcy in everyday society, â€Å"I have about a hundred and eighty bucks in the bank. I can take it out when it opens in the morning, and then I could go down and get this guy’s car. No kidding. We’ll stay in these cabin camps and stuff like that till the dough runs out,† (Page 132). How the movie Conspiracy Theory is related to The Catcher in the Rye, is that the movie’s main character Jerry Fletcher is a New York City Taxi driver who is always telling people that a list events trigged in the world are done by Government conspiracies but he never seems to get anywhere with his theories. However one of the conspiracies comes true and the CIA is trying to shut Jerry up before he does anymore damage. Now the reason why these two are connected is because, in both cases each character are trying to achieve being different and don’t want to be tied down by what other people tell them to do. In Jerry’s case he is trying to tell the truth about these theories to the general public and try to raise awareness about it before it’s too late. In Holden’s case, he feels that he needs to escape this sort of normalcy that exists in his society. The example of running away and living in the country has everything to do with conformity. The external conflict that both characters face have to do with making sure they don’t fall into the trap that society has set out of them and to try and achieve the impossible in a impossible world. Both Jerry and Holden always fee that they are being alienated in society and both are trying to find a purpose in life.
